Lubartów, September 2020

Non-controversial under white and red

Pod biało-czerwoną

The initiative of erecting a monument commemorating the Home Army in Lubartów is already old. More intensively than in 2011. Theoretically, public consultations took place on August 20, 2014. It's just that it was de facto after the establishment of the Honorary Committee, which was theoretically open, but from the very beginning inviting only a dozen or so selected people and entities.

At that time, the discussion concerned only the shape of the monument and its final location. On this occasion, the councilors found it necessary to establish a commission on naming streets and squares and erecting monuments. Many people then said that the location of the monument on Piłsudski Square would be divided among the inhabitants. Many residents said that such consultations were not consultations when certain decisions were made.  11 councilors boycotted the session because they demanded the establishment of an Ad hoc Commission. And dismissal of the Chairman.

As for the city council of Lubartów, the latter finally decided that the monument would be erected at Jana Pawła II Street, plot no. 188/1.

But that was the case before, in 2014. In February this year, the City Council changed its decision and decided that the best location for the monument was Plac im. Marshal Józef Piłsudski. And that the relevant resolution should be adopted quickly, because:

  1. there are funds for the construction of the monument,

  2. a quick decision will ultimately save the square from being sold.

By the way - we do not know from whom the square should be protected, if the current authorities do not want this place to be used as a hammer? What do we already know? According to the councilors' declaration, the City of Lubartów applied for support in the Culture program, Action 1 "Improving the management of cultural heritage". Lubartów not  got a grant from the program, so the financial argument is out of date. Nothing has changed in our opinion. This location and the way of introducing the initiative will continue to arouse controversy and reluctance. Because the form is important, not only the content. The more that this place required special protection, otherwise there would be no topic and discussion about the location of the monument in this place.

There is, however, an initiative that - we believe - can bring the residents together.

White and red connects!

The website devoted to the project reads: The project "Under the white and red" assumes financing by the Government of the Republic of Poland for the purchase of masts and flags in each of the municipalities in Poland, whose inhabitants will join the project. The initiative to buy the mast and the flag will depend on the inhabitants.

In order to take part in the action, it is necessary to collect the appropriate number of votes of support (details in the regulations) online using this website. The vote of support for the initiative to purchase the mast and the flag placed on it, which will be proudly displayed in the center of the commune, can be cast by its inhabitants.

"Under the white and red" is a project that is to unite our country and its inhabitants. It will not only honor the fallen for the freedom and independence of our homeland, but also encourage patriotic attitudes and pride in being Poles.

This patriotic initiative, implemented under the honorary patronage of the Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, will be based on the enthusiasm and action of the inhabitants of our Little Homelands.

The aim of the project is also to commemorate the victory of the Commonwealth's troops over the Bolshevik army in the Battle of Warsaw in 1920. Placing the flag on the mast in a unique place proves how important national symbols are in the lives of Poles. Those for which our ancestors sacrificed their lives in the struggle for the freedom of the Homeland.

We hope that by engaging the inhabitants of our country, we will encourage them to reflect both on patriotism and the future of Poland. The 100th anniversary of the victory in the Battle of Warsaw is an excellent opportunity for this.

Thanks to the project, we also want to build a community and strengthen the idea of an engaged civil society. Let white and red proudly, throughout the year, fly in the hearts of our little homelands!

This is a great opportunity to honor all the fallen, meritorious for Lubartów, but also to join us all in one action, under one flag. Don't you think it's worth it?
